IRVINE, CA – May 16, 2012. CGTech will exhibit version 7.2 of VERICUT CNC machine simulation and optimization software at the International Manufacturing Technology Show:

IMTS Booth E-3346 Chicago, IL September 10-15, 2012

VERICUT 7.2 features many enhancements to improve speed, thereby reducing the time required for manufacturing engineers to develop, analyze, inspect and document the CNC programming and machining process. Along with proactively adding new features, CGTech developers and engineers are focusing on implementing hundreds of customer-driven enhancements.

VERICUT Product/Function Overview:

VERICUT is CNC machine simulation, verification and optimization software that enables users to eliminate the process of manually proving-out NC programs. It reduces scrap loss and rework. The program also optimizes NC programs in order to both save time and produce higher quality surface finish. VERICUT simulates all types of CNC machine tools, including those from leading manufacturers such as Mori Seiki, Mazak, Makino, Matsuura, Hermle, DMG, DIXI, and Chiron. VERICUT runs standalone, but can also be integrated with leading CAM systems such as Catia, NX, Creo Parametric (Pro/E), MasterCAM, EdgeCAM, hyperMILL, Esprit and GibbsCAM.

“For VERICUT 7.2 we continue to focus on the customer’s use of VERICUT and how we can improve the simulation process effectiveness,” said Bill Hasenjaeger, Product Marketing Manager. “We added features to the user interface to simplify the most common user actions and invested significant developer hours to increase speed by more thoroughly taking advantage of multiple processors and background processing.”

Another new feature is the ability to optimize an NC program from a saved simulation. Users can adjust and re-optimize without rerunning the simulation. A new interactive panel displays cutting conditions immediately anywhere in the machining process. The user can navigate the NC program to evaluate cutting conditions and quickly see the results of adjustments to optimization settings.

CGTech will also be demonstrating VERICUT Composite Applications at IMTS. VERICUT Composite Applications are machine-independent off-line programming and simulation software solutions for automated composite tape and fiber-placement CNC machines. There are two separate applications: VERICUT Composite Programming (VCP) & VERICUT Composite Simulation (VCS).

If a person wanted to buy a car, making a decision based on fuel efficiency is straightforward thanks to a well-accepted and uniform method of determining energy consumed under standard operating conditions – miles per gallon or mpg. But, if one were to buy a machine tool, which not only costs more but also consumes significantly more energy, one would be hard pressed to make that decision based on energy efficiency. This is because of the complexity of machine tools and their wide variety of applications. In order to have a simple metric to compare machine tool energy usage, akin to mpg, standardized measurement methodologies are needed. Such a methodology could also help assess machine process energy requirements and environmental impacts. This article discusses a first-of-its-kind effort in developing a simple, usable and practical methodology for evaluating machine tool energy consumption.

The National Center for Defense Manufacturing and Machining (NCDMM) announced today that it has awarded their highest honor, the Lawrence J. Rhoades Award, to John S. VanKirk.

John has been an integral part of the NCDMM since its inception and it is for this reason we honor him today. Not only was he part of the original team tasked to stand up the Center back in 2003, but he served as Chairman of the Board of Directors from 2003-2006, and ultimately assumed the position of President and Executive Director in August 2006. John remained in that position until May 2011 when he was called back to Kennametal Inc. to lead its Aerospace and Defense division.

“John’s leadership, collaboration abilities, and devotion to the advancement of innovative manufacturing technologies have been evident in the more than nine years he has been associated with the Center. His vision has continued to drive the Center to provide the technology that keeps or warfighters safe,” stated Ralph Resnick. “We are especially proud of John and know that Larry Rhoades would have more than approved of our choice.”

John has over 25 years of experience in product and process development and ten years in various organic and inorganic business development roles. Mr. VanKirk holds numerous patents for various material compositions, as well as tool holder designs. He has served as the Vice Chair and Secretary for the NDIA Manufacturing Division, and as Director for DSN Innovations, the Economic Growth Connection in Greensburg, PA, the Westmoreland/Fayette Workforce Investment Board, the National Center for Defense Manufacturing and Machining, the Manufacturing Engineering Advisory Board of Worcester Polytechnic Institute, the Board of the Refractory Metals Association, and the Technology Issues Committee of the Association for Manufacturing Technology.

The Lawrence J. Rhoades Award was established to honor the memory of Mr. Rhoades whose entrepreneurial spirit and dedication to the advancement of manufacturing processes was known industry-wide. Mr. Rhoades was one of the founding fathers of the NCDMM, and an inaugural member of the Board of Directors where he served until his untimely death in 2007.

The NCDMM delivers optimized manufacturing solutions that enhance the quality, affordability, maintainability, and rapid deployment of existing and yet-to-be developed defense systems. This is accomplished through collaboration with government, industrial, and academic organizations to promote the implementation of best practices to key stakeholders through the development and delivery of disciplined training, advanced technologies, and methodologies.

Faced with an aging manufacturing workforce, The Pittsburgh Chapter of the National Tooling and Machining Association spear-headed efforts to bring a national student robotics program to the Pittsburgh region. Local manufacturers and educators joined forces in 2005, and with just 6 schools, launched BotsIQ. Now, in its seventh year, the program has exploded to include more than 40 schools and its own fan base. Working with a Robotics Curriculum based on the National Curriculum Standards and Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s (MIT) mechanical engineering methodology, southwestern Pennsylvania students are taught to design, build and battle robots in a gladiator-style competition. The competition draws on students’ knowledge of math, science, engineering and even public speaking. Perhaps most importantly, students see that building things is challenging, it’s fun, and IT’S A POTENTIAL CAREER.
